Ryan Gracie (August 14, 1974 – December 15, 2007), was a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts fighter with a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Renzo Gracie(his brother)and Master Carlos Gracie Jr.(founder of Gracie Barra). He was one of the most famous members of the Gracie family, and the grandson of Carlos Gracie(the original founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). The PRIDE Fighting Championship organization billed Ryan as the “bad boy” of the Gracie family because of his reputed experience fighting in the streets of Brazil. Anyone traveling to Brazil and mentioning Brazilian Jiu jitsu was suer to hear the famous name, Ryan Gracie. Famed for not only his invincibility in the street but also for his aggression and technical superiority on the mats and in the ring.
Ryan trained with his brother Renzo Gracie, who often served as his cornerman during his fights. He also trained Pancrase fighter Gabriel Vella and jiu-jitsu world champion Fabio Leopoldo while in Brazil.
Ryan Gracie had seven fights in the PRIDE organization, with his first at PRIDE 10 in 2000 and his most recent at PRIDE Shockwave 2004.
Ryan Gracie developed a strong team in Sao Paulo, Brazil where he lived. After his sudden passing in 2007, his academy continues to this day to develop strong competitors and to be a powerhouse in the Paulista(Sao Paulo state)and National Jiu jitsu tournaments.
